The Benefits of Self-Ligating Braces

The Benefits of Self-Ligating Braces

Discovering the best option for your orthodontic needs can be difficult. We’re here to make that decision easy for you.

At The Smile Agency in Pasadena and West Covina, California, Karen Guinn, DDS and our expert orthodontic team offer self-ligating braces. Before sharing the many benefits of self-ligating braces, let’s explain what they are.

How self-ligating braces work

Most everyone is familiar with traditional braces, consisting of brackets attached to your teeth, plus an archwire that runs through them. The wire helps move your teeth with gradual force to get them to their desired places.

The archwire must remain secure in your brackets at all times to achieve successful results, which is achieved by applying small rubber bands or metal ties to your brackets. Your orthodontist also tightens the ties at your visits to facilitate your teeth’s movement.

Self-ligating braces don’t use elastic or metal ties. Instead, they have a built-in system that uses special clips with spring-loaded doors.

We provide two types of brackets: active and passive. Active brackets use a sliding spring clip that presses against your archwire, and passive brackets use a sliding mechanism that doesn’t press on your archwire. Both help your teeth move along at a steady pace.

The benefits of self-ligating braces

Choosing self-ligating braces offers several benefits, including:

Easy to clean

Because self-ligating braces don’t have ligatures that fit over each bracket, you don’t have to worry about food getting trapped. The absence of elastic or metal ties also helps make cleaning easier.

When you wear self-ligating braces, the archwire can move smoothly through the brackets to create efficient, comfortable movement. Many people find they’re more pleasant to wear when compared to traditional braces because of the reduced friction and pressure on your teeth.

With traditional braces, you need to have your elastic or metal ties replaced every 4-6 weeks. Those days are over. Your self-ligating braces only require appointments with us every 8-12 weeks.

In addition, a recent study showed that teeth alignment can occur four months faster with self-ligating braces when compared to results with traditional braces.

If you’re ready for braces that are easier on your teeth, easier on your time, and provide stunning results, then self-ligating braces might be the right choice for you.
